My editor recently shared a POWERFUL video (here) depicting the way blacks are treated by non black business owners. I've been on this black business matter “high” promoting black owned businesses to support and shop during the holiday season and beyond. I am proud to do it not only because I am a black business owner but because it does in fact matter. I'm not only posting graphics that highlight its significance, I'm actually working with many businesses and literally placing them in the faces of thousands of women in my Brown Skin Women Network.
But then I realized something very important and often unmentioned. Black consumers supporting the businesses matter too!
In case you hadn't noticed, I'm a black woman who embraces her ethnic hair, loves her inner being as much (if not more) than her outer being and enjoys exploring different types of wellness opportunities that influences living a balanced and happier lifestyle. I'm also a business owner offering professional events and marketing services to businesses and professionals, while creating the ultimate experience for everyone else (consumers). I'm the black woman who sits on all ends of the spectrum. A black owned business on one end, the consumer on the other and the consultant in the center, bridging the two ends together. Literally. I'm a professional, hence my growing business. But then comes the subject of the latter.
I've been a victim of poor customer service. So poor, it has left me scared and guarded, labeling black businesses as a hit or miss due to a lack of professionalism and poor experiences. The fact that I walk into a black owned store or telecommunication praying for a positive experience and outcome, is a problem. Big problem. So what now?
Well, it's one thing to continue featuring wonderful black owned businesses on my blog and social media outlets, and another to actually connect with black business owners to help them spruce up the customer service experience. As an events and marketing specialist, not a day goes by where I am not reminding my clients of the importance of the customer experience. Do not ignore your customers’ questions or approval of something you've posted. Apologize for any error or inconvenience you may have caused. Interact and engage with the individuals helping you keep your doors open. It's the difference between a good business and a wonderful one.
And consumers, give black owned businesses an opportunity to have your support.
I'd like to add this has everything to do with strengthening the black community and emphasize the power of the black dollar. We influence the beauty industry by an alarming trillion dollar estimate. There's enough to go around so no matter where you spend, just try and do so in a community of folks who are still breaking barriers that are both challenging yet admirable. The beauty here is, like the powerful message in the video (here), we will teach others how we should be treated.
Until next time,
